John Andrew Benson

DVM & Co-Owner

Dr. John Benson received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1973 and went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia in 1979. Since then, he has lived his life doing what he loves; helping pets to have healthy and happy lives.

Fresh out of veterinary school, Dr. Benson worked at a mixed-animal practice in New London, Pennsylvania for one year. In 1980, he purchased Elliot Animal Hospital and renamed the practice Broadway Veterinary Clinic, and has been the Owner ever since. Dr. Benson is certified in Animal Chiropractic Care, and also has areas of professional interest in endoscopy and surgical procedures.

Dr. Benson has a rich history of serving the local community. He previously served on the Board of Directors of Bangor Humane Society and the State Board of Veterinary Medicine, along with serving on the Board of the Maine Veterinary Association and one year as president. He was also the president of Bangor Youth Hockey for one year.

Outside of the hospital setting, Dr. Benson enjoys skiing and gardening, and he is an award-winning homebrewer. His first pets were two Beagles named Rawhide and Pal. He now shares a home with his wife and pet family of five dogs and one cat.

Joseph B. Sipe-Edelman


Dr. Joseph Sipe-Edelman completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri. He furthered his education at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Pathology. In 2006, he earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

After his many years of experience as a veterinarian, Dr. Sipe-Edelman is continually fulfilled by the opportunity to help pets live long, happy, and healthy lives, while also enriching the lives of pet parents. Dr. Sipe-Edelman has areas of professional interest in internal medicine, soft-tissue surgery, dermatology, behavior counseling, and oncology.

Dr. Sipe-Edelman grew up in Illinois and is now a resident of Orono, Maine. He shares a home with his husband, Philip, and their two hound dogs, Ziggy and Darrowby. Outside of the hospital setting, Dr. Sipe-Edelman enjoys running, cooking, reading, and biking. He is fluent in Spanish and Danish and is developing his fluency in French.

Michael A. Albert


Dr. Michael Albert graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pathobiology. Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Albert attended the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Sciences and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1989.

Dr. Albert is a generalist in canine and feline medicine with special interests in cardiology, surgery, and clinical pathology. He has worked in the veterinary field for over 30 years and still finds happiness and fulfillment in seeing pets and their caretakers at Broadway Veterinary Clinic each day. He also volunteers his time with the Bangor Humane Society.

Dr. Albert has roots in Northern Aroostook County. He is a lover of the wide-open spaces and outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, shooting, canoeing, and hunting. Dr. Albert also enjoys spending time with his wife and children, and their German Shepherd named Nyx and Labrador Retriever named Sam.

Katherine Carter


Dr. Katherine Carter is a 1987 graduate of Bangor High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Pre-Vet, from The University of Connecticut in 1991. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University in 1997.
Since before she could spell the word “veterinarian,” Dr. Carter has never strayed from the path of becoming a doctor for animals. Dr. Carter comes to Broadway Veterinary Clinic following a 17-year career as the owner of a small animal veterinary clinic. She previously was an emergency clinician at the Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Brewer. Prior to that Dr. Carter was a mixed-animal veterinarian for five years in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Over the years Dr. Carter has raised and exhibited Teddy guinea pigs, fancy mice, and chinchillas. She lives in her hometown of Bangor and has two teenage sons who make her proud most days. Dr. Carter also has three Papillons, four cats, and freshwater aquarium fish. She is an avid gardener, a lazy kayaker, and enjoys but admits she is terrible at fishing. A fun fact about Dr. Carter is, she a Master Gardener through the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service.

Jennifer Freese


Jennifer Freese obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Campbellsville University in 2002. She graduated from Auburn University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2006.

Originally from Northern Kentucky, Dr. Freese moved to Maine after veterinary school where she has practiced outstanding clinical care ever since. Dr. Freese has professional interests in surgery and endocrinology.

A few of her favorite things include gluten and dairy-free desserts, the movie The Greatest Showman, and the Labrador breed. Her first pet was a dog named Pebbles, and she now has a Labrador as a forever friend named Koda. In her free time, Dr. Freese enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons more than anything else.

Thomas Diffell


Dr. Thomas Diffell is an Associate Veterinarian at Broadway Veterinary Clinic. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1972, and his primary area of professional interest is internal medicine. In the fourth grade, Dr. Diffell read “Animal Doctor” which inspired him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Diffell has worked at numerous AAHA-accredited hospitals, and says the best part about working in the veterinary field is providing care for all of his dog and cat clients. 
Originally from Saginaw, Michigan, Dr. Diffell currently lives in Corinth, Maine with his spouse of 46 years, and Amos, a Giant Shnauzer, Annie, a Border Terrier, Q, a Warmblood horse, Jubilee, a Standardbred horse, and four parakeets. In his spare time, Dr. Difell enjoys hanging out with his two children and five grandkids, gardening, maintaining the farm, and volunteering at his church. A fun fact about Dr. Diffell is that he is a good storyteller!

Kim Shortall

Hospital Manager

Kimberly Shortall joined the veterinary field in 1985 out of her love for animals and desire to make a difference by helping others. As Hospital Manager at Broadway Veterinary Clinic, she fosters a positive and supportive hospital environment for the wonderful doctors and staff, clients, and patients. Kimberly earned an Associate of Science degree in Business Management with professional interests in accounting and bookkeeping.

Originally from New York, Kimberly has found a happy home in Maine and enjoys writing poetry in her spare time. She has had cats as family pets since she was born, and Maine Coon and Siamese are her favorite feline breeds. Currently, Kimberly has seven amazing kitties of her own: Kyle, Victoria, Verona, Nala, Simon, Lucky, and Furman. Fun fact: Kyle has a constant determination to open the fridge and shrimp is his favorite prize!
